contrived writing, dave grohl is awesome, dumb shows, glee, kidz bop, lea michele go away, music that is overplayed, ryan murphy is a tool, sucks, things that annoy, things that dull the mind, weak drama
Here’s another pop culture phenomenon I can do without, but unlike my Lady Gaga rant, this post will be much shorter. Now I really don’t care so much that it’s popular because people should be able like whatever they want, no matter how unoriginal, uninspiring, lazy, or flat out stupid it is (I’ll admit, I like some really dumb things too); what I do hate is when things are shoved in my face non-stop, the thing(s) I dislike start seeping into things I DO enjoy, and/or people try to make it out as something it’s not. And one such thing is the hit tv show, Glee.
Let me be blunt: this show is dumb, dumb, dumb. But that’s not necessarily a bad thing. Look at Adult Swims line up. They have some seriously stupid shows, but even the dumbest are at least interesting (heck, watch any of them long enough, and you’ll find them all strangely hypnotic). Unfortunately there is nothing interesting about Glee, which is supposed to be a “higher caliber” level of programming. All the elements that would make a great show, or even an interesting show, aren’t present. Though vocally gifted (and with the exception of Jane Lynch) the entire cast sucks. They couldn’t act their way out of a paper bag. The plots are so clichéd, despite trying so hard to be “topical.” There’s no real humor (it’s on par with iCarly or Hannah Montana in that department), and the drama comes off hollow (the dialogue quite insipid). It purely exists for the songs, WHICH AREN’T EVEN ORIGINAL! That’s right, you have crappy pop songs and tired worn out rock songs lip synched on tv by the most annoying group of “high schoolers” that ever existed. It’s essentially an hour long Kidz Bop music video, if directed by Nickelodeon or MTV. And Lea Michele is the most obnoxious human being who ever lived. Well, next to Kristen Stewart. And Ryan Seacrest. And Michael Bay.
OH BUT WAIT!! Sometimes they have super famous people pimping themselves out to the show (and it makes me lose much (if any) respect I had for them). Oh, and people like Lindsey Lohan are fans (whoopeeDOO). It’s also, I’ll admit, won a bunch of awards (none that I care anything about, but still I’ll give them those accomplishments). So why aren’t I still super psyched about this, like superawesomeamazeballistictotallycool show? WHY DON’T I GET WITH THE PROGRAM?! Because it’s still a super annoying, poorly contrived show; celebrity endorsements can’t save it, no matter how slick it’s packaged. I don’t care if the resurrected corpses of both Sid Viscous or Graham Chapman showed up on that show (which they never would), I would still find it too cringe worthy to sit through an hour of that crap (well, I might sit through a few minutes, only because I would be immobile due to the initial shock of seeing Graham and Sid). Why? Because no person (no matter how awesome/talented/amazing) could make those kids less annoying, the plot less tired, the songs less shrill. If I wanted to see this kind of crap I would have sat through all the High School Musicals (shudder). At least their songs were original (very, very bad but original).
Also, I find Ryan Murphy odious. He’s a grade-A egotist who rips on truly talented, awesome bands like the Foo Fighters (who don’t need to pimp themselves out) because they find his show as something less than…well, amazing. They simply didn’t find it an appropriate venue for their talent (because, you know, they HAVE talent). So Ryan had himself a little hissy fit. Seriously. What. A. Jerk. (By the way, Ryan, Dave Grohl has more talent in his left nostril than you, ya hack)
And that my friends, is all the reason I need not to watch that stupid show. Heck, it’s enough for me to hate it, to get nauseous at the sight of it’s stupid logo (which I wouldn’t dislike near as much if it wasn’t promoted as if it had some legitimate cultural impact, and could really “influence a generation.” puh-leeze). It has it’s large “gleek” fanbase certainly, and that’s fine, but STOP shoving that crap in my face. It legitimately sucks and not everyone is brain-dead enough to watch/like it and most people don’t care. I change the channel for a reason. I don’t want to see it’s cast constantly in my face, going on shows where they don’t belong, or promoting items I consume and enjoy. I also certainly don’t want to hear a bunch of obnoxious fans in my face getting all heated when I offhandedly say I could care less or roll my eyes (gasp!). And Ryan Murphy should shut his mouth. Period. Glee isn’t sacred. It’s trash. And I’m entitled to dislike it and want it gone from my life (or at least out of my sight).
